The Harper government has been defeated on a historic vote on non-confidence.
Tory M-P’s chanted “Harper, Harper” as they voted against the motion but the opposition parties combined to pass it by a vote of 156 in favour to 145 against.
Prime Minister Harper then addressed the media — saying the Opposition coalition forced this election against the will of Canadians.
The confidence motion cited the government for contempt of Parliament — a first for a national government anywhere in the Commonwealth.
An election campaign is now formally set to begin on Saturday after Prime Minister Harper goes to Rideau Hall to meet with Governor General David Johnston.
