The leash-free dog park at the former Port Elgin landfill site is closed and will remain that way until at least April 3rd.
Spokesperson Abby Bolton says irresponsible dog owners have only themselves to blame.
Bolton says because of a building amount of dog feces on the grounds over the winter, the town stepped in and locked the gates.
She says the park will remain closed until at least Sunday, April 3rd when a clean-up day is planned.
Bolton says she hopes dog owners and others will come out from 1 PM to 3 PM on that day to help do the work.
Bolton says also there will no longer be access to the park during the winter because of the problem.
She says the gates will be locked in future years.
She says she recently had to remove 75 to 100 bags of dog waste at the various waste stations.
Users were informed the waste stations were closed for the season and that dog feces should be taken home by the owner for disposal.
In addition, she picked up another 30 piles of dog waste and it didn’t even put a dent in the poop that needs to be picked up.
As a result, the leash-free dog park is closed now and will no longer open during the winter.
