Today is “World Stop TB Day.”
It’s a day to raise awareness that tuberculosis continues to be a challenge to the health of millions of people worldwide.
The Grey Bruce Health Unit says its a disease that Canadians don’t really give a second thought to anymore, thinking the disease has been wiped out — but it’s not.
In Canada there are about 16 hundred cases of TB each year.
Stats show those at higher risk of tuberculosis are those who are foreign born, aboriginals, healthcare workers, institutional workers and those living with H.I.V.
Public Health Nurse Debby Minielly says TB is a preventable disease when caught in time.
But she notes TB continues to be a major cause of illness and death worldwide and until eliminated — it will continue to affect us all.
Minielly says there are several symptoms people at risk should be aware of — including fever, a lingering cough, poor appetite and others.
Events to promote the Day are being held world wide and include programs here in Grey Bruce.
