Although a major earthquake such as the one that struck Japan recently is highly unlikely to occur in Grey Bruce, there are procedures in place should something go wrong at the Bruce Nuclear Generating Station.
Grey Bruce Medical Officer of Health Doctor Hazel Lynn says in the event of a nuclear accident, a highly practiced evacuation procedure is in place — as well as a stockpile of potassium iodide for those who need it.
Potassium iodide is a pill taken to protect the thyroid gland from radiation in the event of a nuclear accident.
It does not, however, protect against all forms of radiation poisoning.
Doctor Lynn says the stockpile is located at the Davidson Centre in Kincardine and would only be available to those most at risk.
She says potassium iodide is certainly not something you would want to take unless absolutely necessary as it does have many side effects.
