The Grey-Bruce Diabetes Program is helping patients and caregivers understand the link between diabetes and kidney disease.
Program Manager Linda Hoffmeyer says using the technology in the province’s TeleHealth network, they’re able to host a guest speaker from St. Joseph’s in Hamilton via videoconference.
The technology also allows them to host the videoconference at four different Grey-Bruce Health Services sites at once.
Hoffmeyer says that means local residents don’t have to travel as far to get the information they need.
She says they’ll learn more about normal kidney function, and different forms of the disease, as well as screening methods and prevention and treatment methods.
Hoffmeyer says it’s important to understand that about one-third of people who have had diabetes for 15 years or longer will develop kidney disease.
But she says with proper diabetes management, the loss of kidney function can be either delayed or prevented.
The videoconference takes place Thursday at 6:30 PM at the Owen Sound, Meaford and Southampton Hospitals, as well as at the Sauble Family Health Team office in Sauble Beach.
