The President and CEO of Bruce Power continues to follow the situation in Japan following last Friday’s earthquake and tsunami.
Duncan Hawthorne says it is not so much the 8.9 earthquake that is causing havoc in the nuclear industry — it was more the resulting tsunami.
Hawthorne says since Japan is a seismically active area, most structures including the countries power plants are built to withstand earthquakes.
He says the resulting tsunami caused the most damage to the Fukushima nuclear plan — flooding the building it self and causing damage to electrical instruments and cooling system components.
Hawthorne says while Ontario is not a seismically active area, Bruce Power is always prepared for any kind of event which could cause problems for the plant.
He specifically points to the blackout of 2003 as an example of an event in which Bruce Power had to employ backup procedures.
