Overtime is getting an overhaul in Kincardine.
During budget discussions recently, administration brought a new cost-saving measure before council regarding overtime.
Kincardine CAO John deRosenroll says any planned overtime put in a budget will not be paid in cash.
Instead the overtime, if needed, will be compensated with “in lieu” time off.
Some councillors were concerned that while people had the extra time off, it might create more planned overtime for others left behind and that it would spiral out of control.
deRosenroll suggested the duties of those off on “in lieu” time would be covered by the staff of the affected department.
deRosenroll also pointed out that emergency overtime could still be a cash cost.
He says if there’s a storm and roads need to be plowed or a water main breaks in the middle of the night, this would be considered emergency overtime.
He said the employee would be given the option of a cash payment for time or time off for hours worked.
