Property tax payers in Grey County are being hit with an increase of 2.93 per cent this year.
Council approved the budget numbers presented by staff, which called for a 2.43 per cent hike, and then they added a half a percentage point boost.
That increase follows a recommendation from Grey County Warden Arlene Wright.
She wants council to start setting aside funding for future corporate capital projects.
CAO Lance Thurston says that Grey County Council has taken a small but important step towards addressing the sizable infrastructure deficit facing the County over the next 10 to 15 years.
Thurston says the County has 160 to 180 million dollars in infrastructure needs to maintain assets such as our roads, bridges, administration buildings and long-term care facilities.
He says the current rate of investment is not enough, but this new initiative will, if sustained over time, go a long way towards addressing the Countys capital needs.
The budget increase for 2011 means that with an average residential property assessment of 207 thousand dollars — the property owner will see an increase of $24.43 in their 2011 County taxes.
