Bruce Power President and CEO Duncan Hawthorne will appear before the Natural Resources of Canada Standing Committee today.
Hawthorne will be answering questions about the company’s plan to ship steam generators to Sweden via the Great Lakes for recycling.
Hawthorne has referred to the two days of Standing Committee hearings as something of a fact finding mission – as the committee has no regulatory power and cannot put a stop to the plan.
He adds he does not intend to argue the technical merits of the plan as Bruce Power has already done that during the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission hearings.
Hawthorne says he does not expect the outcome of these hearings to delay shipping plans as they had no intention to begin moving the steam generators until winter is officially over.
He says they do still have some approvals to obtain before shipping can begin.
Grey Bruce Medical Officer of Health Doctor Hazel Lynn, Saugeen Shores Mayor and Bruce County Warden Mike Smith, and Huron Kinloss Mayor Mitch Twolan will all be speaking before the committee.
All of whom have voiced support for the plan.
