Bruce Power will appear before a Standing Committee of Natural Resources Canada on Tuesday, March 8 to discuss the shipment of steam generators to Sweden for recycling.
Bruce Power Community and Government Relations Manager Ross Lamont, speaking before Bruce County Council recently, said the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission will also speak.
Lamont says the two-day meeting features other invited speakers on day two including Bruce County Warden/Saugeen Shores Mayor Mike Smith, Huron Kinloss Mayor and a member of the Great Lakes/St. Lawrence initiative, Mitch Twolan and by video conferencing, Grey Bruce Medical Officer of Health Dr. Hazel Lynn.
Lamont says President and CEO of Bruce Power Duncan Hawthorne will try to put the whole project into perspective for the elected officials making up the committee.
Meanwhile, Saugeen Shores Mayor Mike Smith says he’ll tell the committee what he told the CNSC hearings, that Bruce Power is a valued employer in the area with a top notch safety record.
Smith says they’re quite confident Bruce can do the job.
Huron Kinloss Mayor Mitch Twolan says he’ll be there supporting the project as well, despite the fact a group he belongs to — the Great Lakes/St. Lawrence initiative committee–is against the shipment.
Twolan says the committee did not give the mayors in favour of project, a chance to comment on the groups resolution against it.
Ross Lamont says they look forward again to having the opportunity to explain the project to those who would be less familiar with it.
He says they will sell the safety of the project.
