Owen Sound area developer Barry’s Construction will build a new apartment building on the site of another building destroyed by fire last year.
City council gave conditional site plan approval on Monday for an 11-unit building.
It will replace another 11-unit building that was located at 464 11th Street A West.
That building was destroyed in a 750 thousand dollar fire last April.
Nobody was hurt in the blaze, which is believed to have been caused by careless smoking.
Barry Kruisselbrink of Barry’s Construction told the media immediately after the fire that he would rebuild, and the new building would continue to offer affordable housing.
He did not attend Monday’s council meeting — but City Corporate Services Director Pam Coulter says she expects work will begin soon once some minor conditions are met by the developer.
Coulter says the building will be a nice addition to the neighbourhood.
It will be in the style of a bungalow with walk-out basements and will have a stone facade.
The building is within the limits of the previous building and is actually a little bit smaller.
