Huron Bruce Conservative MP Ben Lobb has been named Chair of the Harper government’s auto caucus.
Lobb will lead 35 MP’s and Senators in discussions of issues important to automakers and industry suppliers.
He says even though he represents a heavily rural riding in the Commons he has the credentials to lead the caucus.
Lobb was promoted largely based on his previous experience with Wingham-based Wescast Industries which is the world’s largest supplier of automotive exhaust manifolds.
Lobb’s membership on the auto caucus goes back to when he was elected in 2008 and he has seen the industry respond well in the face of difficult financial times.
He notes that the North American Big Three automakers and manufacturers based in Asia and Europe are listening to buyers who want more fuel-efficient vehicles.
The caucus also makes recommendations to Industry Minister Tony Clement.
All 35 members have either automotive assembly plants or major parts manufacturers and suppliers in their ridings.
The announcement of Lobb’s promotion was made on Thursday.
