The demand for the backpack campaign for the United Way of Bruce Grey is way up — with less than a week to go.
2036 requests have been recieved at the office for a backpack containing all the school supplies kids need to head back prepared to school.
Executive Director Francesca Dobbyn says last year the total number of backpack requests was 1701 adding perhaps this is a sign of the times.
She adds families in the area are struggling more than ever and stretched to the maximum for money.
Dobbyn says 7 per cent of all children in Grey and Bruce live in poverty, so the number to date is still not reaching all the children in need.
Dobbyn also says the requests will continue to come in in the next week as many parents are holding out hope, for the job to be landed or the cheque to arrive.
She says it is not too late to donate — all Meriden Credit Units in Grey and Bruce are accepting donations as well as Staples in Owen Sound.
You can also call the United Way office to make a donation at 519-376-1560.
Dobbyn wants us to know there is no shame if you need some help getting your child a backpack – and all you need to call to make a request is 211 — all information will be taken at that time.
The backpack campaign runs right until Labour Day
