The Associate Dean at the Owen Sound campus of Georgian College sees a bright future for the school.
Donna Jansen says she’d like to see enrolment numbers hit one thousand full-time students.
She says it’s very realistic, as in the past two years, the student body has doubled in size.
Jansen says they have 620 post-secondary students, but if you include the apprenticeship and upgrading students, the full-time number stands around 900 students.
In large part, Jansen attributes the growing numbers to the new power engineering program, which has 70 students this year, and already has a waiting list for next year.
But Jansen says existing programs are also growing more popular, specifically in the nursing, personal support worker, and pre-health sciences.
She says the numbers have been so strong they’ve had to start second intakes.
Jansen expects numbers to increase more rapidly once the new residences under construction are complete.
She says the number of students coming from outside of Grey-Bruce to attend the college are signficantly up.
And she says the growth of programs also make the college more attractive for local high school students, and keep them in the region.
