Saugeen Shores police chief Dan Rivett has presented a 3.3 million dollar operating budget to Saugeen Shores council but we may still see some service cuts.
Chief Rivett was after an additional $21,000 to maintain service levels this summer as was had last year and was turned down.
Deputy Mayor Luke Charbonneau, who also services on the Police Services Board, says council found some $20,000 savings in other budgets but in a tie vote, the motion to give that money to the police was defeated.
Chief Rivett says it could very well mean service cuts to those extra patrols during the summer.
He says the force has no problem covering everything off in the Fall, Winter and Spring, but when the population balloons to 25 to 30,000 in the summer, extra patrols were needed.
Rivett points out the tourist camps, Fairy Lake, speeding in different areas and the harbour are just some of the areas that may see a cutback in service because of no funds.
He says he’ll do his best to re-jig the budget but he doesn’t know how he can avoid service level cuts.
Council will be looking at the budget again on March 14th with the goal of recommending a final document.
