The Great Lakes and St Lawrence Cities Initiative are expressing disappointment at the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission.
They oppose their approval of Bruce Power’s plan to ship decommissioned steam generators to Sweden via the Owen Sound Harbour, the Great Lakes and the St Lawrence River.
The group of cities is still concerned about the risk of a nuclear accident on the water – and the potential risk for radioactivity to reach the water supply.
In it’s analysis, the Cities Initiative shows that an accidental spill of radioactive material near the shore, in the Owen Sound harbour, or in a lock could exceed federal standards to radioactivity in drinking water and trigger emergency intervention.
Bruce Power has announced that the transport of the steam generators will be delayed until Spring.
The company has stated that safety is a top priority.
