Owen Sound has welcomed another refugee family.
The Owen Sound and Vicinity Ministerial Refugee Committee helped a family of eight from Burma in September of 2009.
Spokesperson Nancy Umbach says this time they’re helping a single, 26-year old Somalian mother and her two daughters from Egypt.
The girls are ages four and seven.
However, Umbach says the current civil unrest in Egypt isn’t behind the family’s move.
She says the family was ready to move in December because single mothers are considered women at risk in that region of Asia.
Umbach says the family is staying with Councillor David Adair and his wife Kate Walsh.
The girls are attending school at Sydenham, where Walsh teaches.
Umbach says they are trying to find a two-bedroom apartment for the family and also trying to raise 15 thousand dollars to support the family through the year.
She says they’ve already raised six thousand, and residents can make donations through St. Thomas Anglican Church.
Umbach says they’re also looking for female volunteers to help watch the girls while the mother attends English classes for a couple of hours each night.
She says a few Arab-speaking women in the Owen Sound community have already stepped forward to help with translating.
