Owen Sound’s top cop is building a case for every front line officer to be equipped with a taser.
In Police Chief Tom Kaye’s 2010 report — he outlined the use of tasers over the past year in Owen Sound.
Kaye tells Bayshore Broadcasting News that provincial standards don’t require a report every time a taser is pulled, but Owen Sound Police do.
Kaye says it’s their hope every frontline officer at some point in time gets issued a taser, so Kaye says they require strict reporting of usage to build a business case for government.
The Chief says they track every time a taser is withdrawn as well as exactly where the taser probes land on the individual.
Owen Sound Police actually had to fire their tasers in two incidents this past year, while tasers were pulled out and displayed in eight cases.
In those eight cases — Kaye says all of the people threatened with use of a taser submitted to the arrest without any further escalation or use of force.
