Brockton’s Heritage Committee is urging residents living in an older home to see if it can be registered.
The Heritage Committee is looking for buildings of architectural value or cultural significance to build up Brockton’s Heritage Registry and Cultural Heritage Properties list.
Committee Chair Ted Cobean is also encouraging farmers with older barns or sheds to register those structures.
Cobean says it’s all about pride of ownership and preserving our past.
Currently only 36 homes and structures are registered with Brockton’s Heritage registry.
But Cobean believes there are hundreds of homes and barns in Brockton that could make the list — particularly in the Greenock and Brant wards.
Cobean assures the public that having their home or barn registered, does not mean you need special consent for renovations to the building.
He says the only catch is that you must provide 60 days notice if you plan to demolish your registered building.
Cobean says Brockton is rich in heritage homes and farms and hopes many homeowners will come forward.
If something significant or someone special visited your home or building — it too may quality for the registry.
Brockton’s Heritage Registry includes the Hartley House, the Walker House and the Victoria Jublilee Hall in Walkerton.
