Building fees in Huron Kinloss are expected to increase this March.
Chief Building Official Matt Farrell says the last time the municipality raised their rates was five years ago.
He says every four to five years rates typically go up.
Farrell says most of their neighbouring municipalities increased building fees last year, so Huron Kinloss council thought it was time they did the same.
He says Ashfield Colborne Wawanosh is a very comparable community to Huron Kinloss and the building fees in ACW are similar to what they are proposing.
The increase means it will cost 55 cents per square foot on any new residential, commercial or industrial project — which Farrell says is an increase of 10 cents.
The increase for farm buildings is projected at 3 cents.
As far as new builds go in Huron Kinloss — Farrell says they had a few big projects last year, but so far he says nothing too substantial has come across his desk.
With that said, he is optimistic 2012 will be a good year for construction in Huron Kinloss and expects to see a few more large livestock operations.
The building fee increase is expected to be finalized at the council meeting scheduled for March 19th.
