The family of a Grey Highlands girl who died from Sudden Unexplained Death due to Epilepsy is organizing another event in her memory.
Jordan’s Slide for SUDEP takes place at Beaver Valley Ski Club today.
Deb Fawcett says they hardly had time to understand epilepsy when their daughter Jordan was first diagnosed.
She died soon after in 2010, at age 15.
Fawcett says the more her family learns about the illness, the more they hope to spread awareness so that it’s something that gets talked about.
Fawcett says winter was Jordan’s favourite season and she loved to ski, so the family wanted to incorporate this into an awareness event.
She says they’ve been working with a newly formed not-for-profit, SUDEP Aware, which was founded by Doctor Elizabeth Donner, a neurologist from Sick Kids Hospital in Toronto.
Fawcett says they’ve been impressed with Doctor Donner’s passion for the cause, and she hopes they can help raise more money for research to understand SUDEP.
Today’s event includes skiing, snowshoeing and a slalom race.
There are also prizes and presentations to learn more about SUDEP.
It all takes place from 9 AM to 4 PM.
