Relief is coming soon for emergency doctors’ at the Saugeen Memorial Hospital in Southampton.
A new physician assistant is currently in-training to eventually help ease the backlog of cases.
Chief of Staff Doctor Bob Severs tells Bayshore Broadcasting News they’re thrilled to have Doctor Ajay Gupta in-staff and starting later this month.
Physician Assistants help with all types procedures such as casting, suturing and draining abscesses — all under the auspices of the attending physician.
Doctor Severs says physicians in Southampton deal with a very high volume of patients going through that site and Dr. Gupta will help ease the backlog of traffic.
Doctor Gupta was a practicing doctor in India before coming to Canada, where he practiced family medicine, worked in public health and emergency rooms in India.
He also has an advanced degree in hospital management and spent over seven years in Africa in the 1990’s working in International Health.
Grey Bruce Health Services’ has had a similar position in effect for the past couple of years in their Durham hospital.
