The move to build a Deep Geologic Repository near the Bruce Nuclear site in Tiverton will inch forward with an orientation session in Ottawa on Tuesday.
Ontario Power Generation wants to build an underground bunker to house intermediate and low level radioactive materials from their nuclear sites including the Bruce Power location.
Recently the federal government appointed members to a Joint Review Panel that will look at the plan by Ontario Power Generation.
OPG spokesperson Ted Gruetzner says the meeting begins a six month public comment period for the project’s Environmental Impact statement.
Although the public can attend the session — or watch on the Canadian Nuclear Safety commission web site — Gruetzner says there is no opportunity to ask questions.
However he tells Bayshore Broadcasting News the public can submit written comments afterwards and there will be more chances for questions at future public meetings.
Tuesday’s session in Ottawa begins at 9 AM.
The project could take 10 years to construct and cost 16 to 20 billion dollars.
