The Tom Thomson Art Gallery in Owen Sound wants to support young artists in our region.
Virginia Eichhorn — the Curator of the Owen Sound gallery — says that’s why they have established the Tom Thomson Art Gallery Scholarship.
She says an award will be given to one graduating student from each of the city’s high schools — OSCVI, West Hill, and St. Mary’s — and to one student from the First Nations community.
The award includes 200 dollars cash and a selection of books from the Art Gallery.
Eichhorn says this is a way for them to show young artists that they are being recognized, and to keep up the good work.
Eichhorn says preference will be given to students who have volunteered or done their co-op with the gallery, and to those who are planning to pursue arts in their post-secondary education.
She says there is a misperception about having an arts degree and getting a job.
Eichhorn points out that many employers — no matter if it’s business or technology — value a strong sense of creativity.
