There is a meeting today about active transportation.
The Grey Bruce Health Unit and the two Counties are hosting a forum to talk about how communities can plan so more people bike and walk.
The Health Unit will use some examples from a study done by 16 youth in Hanover and Walkerton — who tracked their travel data with a portable GPS.
Public Health Youth Advisor Jason Cranny says the results were surprising.
He notes the youth stated the need for better sidewalks, more benches and garbage receptacles.
Cranny says the feedback can be used by communities to address barriers to cycling and walking and also improve safety.
Cranny feels the issue is important because they need to get more people active to fight high obesity rates in our region.
Youth Engagement Officer Jason Weppler says it will also mean fewer people are behind the wheel of vehicles.
Stats show 79 per cent of all youth deaths in Grey Bruce are due to motor vehicle collisions — and a 17 year old Durham student died last month in a three vehicle crash.
There will be a closed session Friday morning for engineers, public works and roads professions.
There will be a free public session from 2:30 PM to 5:30 PM at the Health Unit office in Owen Sound.
