The city of Owen Sound is eliminating jobs and offering early retirement incentives.
Mayor Deb Haswell says the City is facing challenging times with a number of financial pressures that will continue into the next several budget years.
So the City announced Tuesday it is eliminating six positions at City Hall — all six positions are within CUPE 1189 (Canadian Union of Public Employees).
Haswell says it’s important to stress the terminations do not reflect poor job performance, but were rather very tough budget decisions.
City Manager Glen Henry says right now they won’t be releasing details around what positions are be eliminated.
Henry says the terminations will take effect January 28th.
In the meantime — Henry says they will be announcing the details around an early retirement incentive plan for all staff in the next few weeks.
But Henry notes the uptake by staff would be voluntary, and subject to approval by the City.
As for the affected staff of Tuesday’s announcement — Mayor Haswell says there will be opportunities for career counselling as well as access to the Citys Employee Assistance Program (EAP).
