Brockton is putting the fertilizer issue to a vote with its inland lake residents.
All affected households are being polled to determine where they stand on a proposed fertilizer ban within 100 meters of the lake.
There are three options to chose from:
Option A involves a complete ban on fertilizers within 100 meters of the lake.
Option B only allows fertilizers that do not contain phosphorus.
Option C involves no ban or limits on fertilizers within 100 meters of the water.
Lake Rosalind Property Owner Association Chair Pat Mulhern is pleased Brockton is providing residents with a chance to have their say.
He notes fertilizer use has contributed to blue green algae problems on Lake Rosalind and Marl Lake during the hot summer months.
Mulhern says although there will be some resistance, he believes the majority of homeowners want some form of fertilizer bylaw in place.
Inland lake residents will be provided with a special pin number to vote on the matter via the phone or internet.
Only one vote per household is allowed.
The public input will help Brockton determine what controls it will put into place this Spring regarding fertilizers and it’s inland lakes.
