The trial of a 43 year old Owen Sound man begins in a Sarnia courtroom today.
He faces charges of 1st degree murder and aggravated sexual assault.
The OPP say the suspects’ name cannot be released because at the time of the crime he was only 15.
In October 1983 — 70 year old Velma Thompson was found sexually assaulted and stabbed to death at her Petrolia home.
For years the case was open as OPP followed up leads.
In June of 2008, the suspect was arrested in Owen Sound where he has lived for several years.
Inspector Ian Maule tells Bayshore Broadcasting News, the suspect was a person of interest since 2001 but he had not been questioned by police prior to his arrest in the Scenic city.
Pre-trial Motions were heard in December and the accused was released on bail in March of 2009.
The murder trial is scheduled to last up to six weeks.
