The Grey Bruce Health Unit is changing the way air quality is monitored in arenas.
While they will continue with annual inspections during the week — Public Health Manager Bob Hart says February they’re also going to run tests during arena peak times beginning this month.
There’s been evidence from other Health Unit’s in Ontario that shows air quality results are different during peak times.
Hart says the change is attributed to the increased use of ice resurfacing machines.
There’s a mixture of diesel, propane and gas run zambonis in the 30 plus arenas in Grey Bruce.
Hart says Health Unit Inspectors will work with maintenance staff to test emissions coming right out of the equipment.
He also notes they will test all ventilation systems during peak hours and compare the data.
To Hart’s recollection there’s never been an arena actually close its doors as the result of a Health Unit inspection, however he does say there’s been incidents where zambonis have been taken offline for maintenance work.
