The town of Hanover is fighting to keep its Zellers store open.
The town is sending a letter to Target — the new owners of Zellers — after Bayshore Broadcasting News first reported in January that the Hanover store may close.
Target is also considering locking up for good the doors of Zellers stores in Owen Sound, Collingwood and Goderich.
CAO Mike Dunlop says they want Target to reconsider the Hanover market as a viable regional location.
Dunlop points to the Hanover store’s history of strong sales — which has been one of the top stores in all of Ontario.
Mayor Kathi Maskell says Hanover wants to ensure Target realizes how important Zellers is to the local community.
Maskell says it doesn’t just serve the town of Hanover but the entire region of 50 thousand people.
Maskell says protecting the Zellers store along with its employees remains a key priority for Hanover Council.
