Our Medical Officer of Health in Grey Bruce continues to push for smoke free apartments and condo buildings.
Dr. Hazel Lynn says in order to ban smoking in those type of dwellings, ALHPA — which is the provincial organization for public health agencies — has to fight to change the Landlord Tenant Act.
Doctor Lynn says they need to change the act to add a stipulation giving owners the option to add a smoke free designation into a lease.
She says a large number of property owners would really like the change as it lowers their insurance and cleaning costs.
A recent study suggests 80 per cent of all Ontarians living in multi-unit dwellings want to be smoke free — which Doctor Lynn says is about the same number that don’t smoke.
The Grey Bruce Health Unit Board recently supported a letter by ALPHA to push for the change in the Landlord/Tenant Act.
