The Owen Sound and North Grey Union Public Library is holding some interesting activities today/
Family Literacy Day takes place next Friday, the 27th, but the library is teaming up with the Ontario Early Years Program to celebrate today.
Children and Youth Services Assistant Jill McFadden-Bartley says they have activities, crafts, stories and songs taking place in the library auditorium for children ages 0-8 and their parents and caretakers.
And the library will hand out a free book to each child there.
McFadden-Bartley says it’s important to develop literacy skills in the early years.
She says they will teach parents fun ways to help their child with literacy at any age during today’s activities.
But she says you don’t need to be at the library to celebrate.
She says it’s crucial to your child’s development that you take some time out each day to read or do a learning activity.
McFadden-Bartley says there are great Internet resources, but you just need to be careful, especially in the very early years.
She says there is a two-way connection when you sit down to actually read a book, which is something you can’t always get with a computer.
Today’s Family Literacy Day event takes place from 10 AM to 11:30 AM.
It is free to attend, but you do need tickets as there is limited space.
