The Grey Bruce and Huron Labour Councils are joining a rally in London on Saturday to show their support for Electro-Motive workers who have been locked out by their employer.
U-S Giant Caterpillar locked out the workers on New Years Day and is demanding pay and benefit cuts totalling nearly 65 per cent, if the plant is to keep operating.
The CAW says Caterpillar bought the operation a few years ago and now wants to close the plant so it can move production to the United States.
Grey Bruce Labour Council President Dave Trumble says a busload of supporters from Owen Sound and Goderich will head to London for Saturday morning.
Trumble says at last word, some 57 buses of workers from across Ontario were headed to the rally at Victoria Park in London.
President of the Huron District Labour Council Jim Vance says the Canadian government is turning its back on the workers at Electro-Motive.
He says the Feds initially gave the company a grant and won’t stand behind the workers when it’s clear Electro-Motive wants to move their operations to the United States.
Vance says Canada has already lost a great amount of its manufacturing base through trade deals and the government needs to put a stop to it.
He says the government needs to secure good jobs in Canada, and not just offer big tax breaks to corporations that inevitably take the jobs away.
A bus will leave Owen Sound at 6:30 AM on Saturday, from Port Elgin at 7:15 AM, from Kincardine at 7:50 AM and Goderich at 8:30 AM.
The rally in London is from 11 AM until 2 PM on Saturday.
