The Municipality of North Huron is scrambling to find an alternate police and fire dispatch service.
They’ve been told that the Hanover Police Service will opt out of providing a dispatch function at the end of this year in an effort to control operating costs.
North Huron Fire Chief John Black says while they still have 11 months to find a new dispatcher it really isn’t much time because of cost and efficiency considerations.
The major hurdle in finding a new dispatcher include technical and equipment issues as well as phone line issues.
Black says it not known yet if the switch to another dispatch service will cost more — but that a growing number of small communities are hooking up to regional dispatchers.
West Grey already has opted out of Hanover’s service — and the dispatch for West Grey Police will be done in Owen Sound.
Black says in the coming months the fire department will present a report containing options for North Huron Council to consider.
