December was another solid month for construction in the city of Owen Sound.
Development Co-ordinator Sandi Parks says 25 permits were received last month compared with 14 a year ago.
The value of construction was 1.1 million dollars which is almost exactly double the level in December of 2010.
The biggest permit issued was for interior work on the new LCBO store near Zehrs on the East side, worth 600 thousand dollars.
The total amount of construction started in 2011 was just under 16 million dollars, compared to 71.5 million in 2010.
However the number is skewed by the Regional Rec Centre in 2010 worth over 33 million.
The figure for 2011 is actually the lowest in nearly a decade, but Parks says if you combine 2010 and 2011 together — it represents the strongest two year period for construction ever in Owen Sound.
Parks says a lot of the projects started in 2010 are still under construction now.
Meanwhile, a building permit application has come in for the new Heritage Grove development near Home Depot.
However, Parks says the developer has not met the qualifications for site plan approval process, so no permit has been issued yet.
Heritage Grove Centre Incorporated is planning 147 thousand square feet of development on a 20 acre property.
It involves nine stores and the developer has about 18 months to get it up and running.
