The province is confirming their contribution to the Goderich and Area Disaster Relief Fund.
Chairperson Duncan Jewell says the Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing responded yesterday and said they would be providing two dollars for everyone one dollar raised locally.
Jewell says that means up to 11.6 million dollars will be available to the Disaster Relief Fund to help residents with property damage from the August tornado.
Jewell doesn’t think they’ll need the entire amount of money, but it’s encouraging to see a number that big to cover all the costs.
He says prior to the new year, the committee had reviewed 105 of the 373 applications for financial assistance and approved payments to 84 of them.
The 21 files that were denied before Christmas was mostly because of ineligible claims, like covering a deductible, vehicle damage or because it was a public group.
Jewell says they still have many applications left to review and the committee is urging anyone with incomplete information on file to contact the Disaster Relief Fund to update them.
He says it could take several months still to get through the rest of the applications.
