It’s New Year’s weekend and the group Mothers Against Drunk Driving wants you to drink responsibly.
Sharon Lee Wideman of the MADD Grey North Bruce chapter says stats alone should make you think twice about drinking and driving.
Stats show four Canadians are killed and 190 are injured every day as a result of alcohol and drug related crashes.
The statistics don’t stop there.
According to the Federal Ministry of Transportation — the cost of impaired driving deaths, injuries and property damage in 2008 in Canada reached a combined 21.62 billion dollars.
And in 2008, it was estimated that 2,694 individuals were killed in motor vehicle crashes in Canada.
Teenagers have the highest death rate in drunk driving and drug related crashes.
Wideman says you can help lower those numbers by picking up a red ribbon.
They are available at numerous locations in Grey Bruce including Wal-Mart stores in Owen Sound, Hanover and Port Elgin.
Wideman says it’s a symbol of your commitment to drive safe and sober.
