After five years — Brockton and Hanover have cleared one hurdle for the expansion of their landfill.
The Saugeen Ojibway Nation has signed off on their concerns regarding the proposed expansion project.
Brockton Councillor Charlie Reidl says it’s a major step towards receiving provincial approval for the landfill expansion.
Now the Ministry of Environment must make a decision on the project — and Reidl says that is expected by April 1st.
Last year at this time — the Saugeen Ojibway made an 11th hour request for an independent review by their own engineers.
After scrutinizing the studies — the Saugeen Ojibway Nation has agreed with the steps taken so far.
But the First Nation also wants to continue to be consulted and involved in any future discussions about the expansion project.
There’s more good news about the landfill project.
An appeal to the Ontario Municipal Board by a neighbouring resident has been withdrawn.
When all is said — the proposed landfill expansion is expected to cost about 6 million dollars.
This price tag includes the closure of the current landfill, the expansion of the new one and the ongoing monitoring costs.
