Saugeen Shores Council has said no way to a one-way street in downtown Port Elgin for now.
Staff had recommended making Elgin Street between Goderich and Waterloo Street one-way westbound to allow for more street parking.
The expansion of the public library on the block eliminated five parking spaces, and making the street one way would create seven spaces.
Ten letters were sent to area residents and business owners.
One letter of support was received, and one letter opposing the plan.
Vice Deputy Mayor Doug Gowanlock says traffic issues will take a lot of study and feels one-way streets might be a good solution.
But he doesn’t think creating just one of them is a good idea.
Gowanlock thinks it could cause more problems than it would solve.
Councillor Fred Schildroth says staff should wait a year and see how the library expansion influences traffic in the area.
Councillor Luke Charbonneau — who chairs the committee working an a Community Improvement Plan for downtown Port Elgin — says there is a shortage of parking spaces in the area and his committee is already working on possible solutions.
Charbonneau says it would be wise for council to wait and see what sort of feedback the committee provides on the issue.
Councillor Diane Huber would rather see the issue of parking and one-way streets examined when the entire municipal parking by-law comes up for review.
The by-law is scheduled to be reviewed in approximately four weeks and the question of a one-way section on Elgin Street will be included in that process.
