The Grey Bruce Medical Officer of Health is looking on the positive side of the H-1-N-1 flu outbreak.
As Bayshore Broadcasting News Reporter Peggy O’Neill tells us — Dr. Hazel Lynn thinks there will be a break in the pandemic.
Dr. Hazel Lynn says there are several factors working against the outbreak of the H-1-N-1 flu.
Lynn says with the upcoming summer season, the likelihood of spreading the flu is very slim.
Lynn says this will buy time to make a vaccine in order to fight off the the virus.
She says it usually takes four to six months to make a vaccine but because this is not a brand new virus it should be ready for our flu season.
Flu season normally begins around the end of October or early November.
Lynn says she is encouraged with how quickly her staff has responded to the outbreak.
She says they have a great surveillance system in place and they are very well prepared with an active team.
She says she receives an automatic update on the number of cases being investigated every six hours.
Currently 31 cases of the H-1-N-1 flu have been confirmed in Ontario – 25 of which are in the Greater Toronto Area.
There are no confirmed cases in Grey and Bruce.
Lynn says if you feel mildly ill, rather than going to the emergency room and over working nurses – you should stay at home.
She says there is a list of how to look after yourself from home if your feeling mildly ill at www.publichealthgreybruce.on.ca.
