Teaching children key safety practices is a top priority in our community.
The Owen Sound Police Service held the official launch of their “Positive Choices Community Safety Village” at Hillcrest Elementary School in Owen Sound on Thursday.
Owen Sound Mayor Deb Haswell was on hand for the official opening, and she hopes this can be a step in making the city as safe as possible for our children.
Owen Sound’s Deputy Police Chief Bill Sornberger says the safety village can teach kids about traffic and fire safety, water and environmental safety and more.
He says by having an interactive set-up, kids can use hands on techniques to absorb the knowledge and form good habits.
Sornberger adds having the kids learn in their own environment can be very beneficial and is a great learning tool.
The safety village is one of only two in Ontario, with the 66 thousand dollar facility funded through the Proceeds of Crime Front Line Policing Grant.
Sornberger says money seized from criminals is used in the program.
The safety village is set to tour schools in the area, in order to get the message of safety out to kids.
