Bruce Power is painting a rosy economic picture in Alberta.
The company predicts a nuclear plant in the Peace River region would contribute 12 billion dollars to the province’s economy during the construction period.
A preliminary report from Bruce Power also shows a nuclear plant would generate 27 hundred long term jobs.
Bruce Power spokesperson John Peevers the report is based on their application to generate four thousand megawatts of electricity from two to four reactors.
Peevers says they based a lot of the information on their experience with the Bruce rebuild in Tiverton.
The preliminary report is part of Bruce Power’s environmental assessment into a nuclear project in Peace Country.
It will take three years to complete that assessment.
The Alberta government has also assigned a panel to investigate whether nuclear energy is feasible in the province.
Peevers says they released the report in part to educate residents.
He adds they have opened an office in Peace Country and will talk to residents — including First Nation’s people — about nuclear energy.
If Bruce Power does receive approval to build a nuclear plant, it would still take about 10 years to complete.
