It’s been over a decade in the making, but an extension of 10th street East to 16th Avenue East in Owen Sound is about to become a reality.
City Manager Jim Harrold says a deal has been finalized with the Bluewater District school board that pegs the cost to the board at $1,075,000.
Prior to building OSCVI, a 1996 development agreement stated the board would pay for the 10th street extension, but the cost at the time was about half of the current estimate.
Harrold says the new price tag for the board is set, and if costs soar the city will have to pay an extra.
Owen Sound will also pay for any additions, such as bike lanes or an extra turn lane.
City manager Jim Harrold says the next step is setting up an Environmental assessment to determine the impact on traffic and residences along the route but he says not building the extension is … really not on the table.
Harrold says public feedback will be accepted at 1 or 2 Environmental assessment meetings, likely late this fall or early winter.
Construction should begin in the spring or early summer of 2009.
The 10th street Extension will provide an alternative access route to the Hospital, OSCVI and Georgian College.
