In October of 1983, 70 year old Velma Thompson was found sexually assaulted and stabbed to death at her home in Petrolia near Sarnia.
Inspector Ian Maule tells Beach News, a team of investigators began reviewing the case in February of this year.
Under Project consolidation, Inspector Maule says “cold cases” are reviewed for any new evidence.
The suspect was a person of interest since 2001 but had not been questioned by police prior to his arrest in the Scenic city last month.
The Owen Sound man faces charges of 1st degree murder and aggravated sexual assault.
Inspector Maule says DNA evidence was instrumental in leading to the arrest.
