The high fuel cost is putting Brockton’s garbage collection in a tailspin.
Council received a letter from their contractor — Bruce Sales and Service — at their meeting on Monday asking them to for a hike on their four-year agreement to cover the high fuel prices.
The letter informs Council that due to their situation they can no longer absorb the increasing cost of fuel in order to pick up garbage in the Municipality.
Council has informed staff to work something out with the contractor.
Mayor Charlie Bagnato says they are thinking about letting the company bill the Municipality for the cost of fuel.
He says they are also considering reducing the number of garbage pick ups to once every two weeks during the winter time.
Bagnato says when the contract was signed in 2007 the price of gas was $0.78 a litre and has since jumped by as much as 70%.
He says when they open tenders for services they may no longer see company offer long term contracts because of the inflating fuel prices.
Bagnato fears that this is just the tip of the iceberg as just about every business is affect by the high fuel prices.
