City Council approved the staff’s recommendation last night to invest between 12 and 15 thousand dollars in the park, near the Bayshore Community Centre, to improve it and make it more safe.
Council at their meeting on June 16th voted to close the park temporarily due to it’s current condition and wanted an action plan from staff on how to clean up the park.
Many city youth that were users of the park were upset including 16 year old Wesley Hassard.
Wesley says he spent most of his free time at the park and put up signs at the park trying to save it.
Wesley says he is very happy with council’s decision to keep the park open.
Councillor Deb Haswell says the BMX park is part of our community and the city needs more places like that where it is free and a place for children to go to.
Councillor Tom Pink applauds Councillor Bill Twaddle’s actions who brought the condition of the park to the attention of council and says if it wasn’t for the reaction from the users of the park about the closure then council may not have done anything about the park.
The money invested would ensure the park is useable for the next five years or so and after that the city will look at a long term solution such as a possible relocation.
Work is expected to start immediateley and the hope from council is to have the park open within the next week or two.
