There will be a unique parade in Dufferin County this afternoon featuring the Stanley Cup.
Aaron Downey of the Stanley Cup Champion Detroit Red Wings is bringing the Cup ” home ” for a day of celebration.
The parade portion of the day will commence at the Shelburne Arena at 12:30 P.M.
From the Shelburne Arena, the parade will weave its way through the streets of the town and eventually arrive at the Honeywood Arena where it will stay for the remainder of the day.
Among the highlights of the parade route will be a trip through the Downey Potato Farm in Dufferin County, a tribute to Downey’s roots on the farm.
Once the Stanley Cup is at Honeywood, there will be a number of activites including an autograph and photo session, food and live entertainment plus a licensed beverage area
Proceeds from the day will be used, in part, to support minor hockey in Honeywood and in Shelburne.
Downey, refers to himself as a ” mediocre slug ” as hockey player, is very proud of his accomplishments in hockey, and hopes his hockey journey serves as an example to everyone of what can be achieved in hockey and in life.
A year ago, Downey was dropped by the Montreal Canadiens and was out of hockey as of last summer.
He made a number of calls including one to Mike Babcock, the coach of the Detroit Red Wings, who invited him to attend the Wings training camp as a non-roster player.
Downey says winning the Stanley Cup has invigorated him, and he visualizes that he’ll be able to play for a number of seasons ahead.
