Sixty-four hundred metric tonnes of wheat is on a ship this week headed for Ethiopa, thanks to the generosity of farmers across Canada participating in the Foodgrains Bank.
In Bruce County, a Dobbinton area farmer has been doing his bit for charity for the past ten years.
Harvey Monkman has donated a piece of his land to Foodgrains and each year several famers share the work and produce grain to be shipped or sold for cash, which is then donated to the bank.
On Soundingboard recently Monkman says despite the stories of farmers down on their luck in Canada, many still have time to help the less fortunate around the world.
He says we’re pretty privleged in Bruce County and that should be shared.
Monkman says his church in Mount Hope, along with the Southampton United Church last year donated closed to $9,000 to the bank and that balloons to $36,000 because the federal government matches the donation, 4-to-1.
Tonight the Southampton United Church is holding a concert at 7pm featuring Canadian fiddle champion Scott Woods of Fergus.
Monies raised will go to the Canadian Foodgrains Bank.
Tickets are $15 for adults and $5 for children.
