A town hall meeting will take place Monday night in Port Elgin to talk about the wind turbine project at the CAW Family Education Centre.
It begins at 6:30 PM at the Lakeshore Recreation Centre — and it’s expected to be a packed house since there is no Saugeen Shores Council meeting tonight.
The Saugeen Shores Turbine Operation Policy group — also known as STOP — is hosting the meeting to inform residents about what they say are the serious health and safety problems related to this issue.
They are the same people who staged a protest at the site the day construction began in November.
The group says this installation is located in a densely-populated residential neighbourhood and violates Ontario’s current setback laws that are designed to protect health and safety.
STOP is also worried the CAW wind turbine project sets a precedent for future wind energy projects.
They say the Provincial Auditor General is “leaping before looking.”
Construction of the 25-storey tall turbine has already begun, as it had approval from the Ministry of Environment in 2005 — before the current laws came into effect.
The municipality has also expressed opposition to the project.
Tonight’s town hall meeting takes place from 6:30 PM to 9 PM at the Lakeshore Recreation Centre.
