Work is about to begin on Women’s House Serving Bruce and Grey’s Second Stage Housing.
The organization will be building three blocks of housing in their service area between this July and February 2010.
Second Stage Housing is individual apartments where abused women and their children can stay up to one year.
Second Stage Committee Chair Pauline Witzke says the first build of a four-unit apartment block in Port Elgin will start next month.
Witzke says at this point 90 percent of the design of the building is complete and they are about to go to tender for the build.
Witzke says the building will have several environmentally friendly choices.
The building will feature low Volatile Organic Carbon (VOC) emission choices in flooring, adhesives and paints and windows to reduce off-gassing; the homes will have in-floor heating fed with on-demand heaters which will save energy and there will be a sand point to provide water landscaping that is not treated to drinking water standards which reduces the demand on the municipal water supply.
Women’s House still needs to raise 310 thousand dollars for the build to make it mortgage free and keep the rents affordable for the women and children.
The build in Port Elgin is expected to be complete by the end of this year while the other two builds will be completed in February 2010.
